***This is very sad and I almost blogged a picture of a dead animal, but then again, I thought I'd spare you all that. Although, yes, I did take a picture in the store. Anyway, on to my story...
JM is doing a research project so I went out for a little while to kill some time with Jenna today. We went into this pet store and after this I swear I don't know if I'll ever be able to go into another pet store again. And let me just preface this too by saying, I watched Oprah and Lisa Ling's puppy mill story a while back and I knew I could never buy another pet store puppy, but now I don't even want to visit one again. It was that bad.
- This pet store has a monkey swinging around in the cage in the middle of the store. Even though, I don't agree with this, this was the LEAST of it.
- So, after the monkey, I went to show Jenna the puppies. There were a ton of people in there and the man worker that was behind the wall getting the pups out to show people started snapping at a very barking pup. He said, "What's your problem?" UGH - well, his problem is that he's been behind a small cage probably his whole life and there are a ton of people and he wants out!! This made me just want to buy that certain dog and take him home, but not for the $649 price tag.
- And then I thought I'd go let Jenna look at the lizards - well we never made it to the lizards, instead we saw rabbits. And very sadly, I am pretty sure one of the rabbits in the cage was DEAD. (This is what I snapped a pic of) There were 2 white rabbits in one cage, one lying there as stiff as could be with his eyes half open and the other one smelling it and probably wondering why the dead one wasn't moving.
Now, I really wish there was someone I could call and complain to. But, I'm sure this is a privately operated store, so who exactly would I call? And, if you happen to live in the KC area and want to know which store I'm talking about so you won't ever visit, just let me know. This place seriously needs to be closed down. It has made me so sad that I had to come blog about it!!!
Ok, hopefully, I'll be back today with a happier post!

that is so awful. i have no tolerance for people who mistreat animals. they are God's creatures too.
OMG, That is horrible!! Pet stores give the creeps!! We only go to Pet Smart or PetCo (is that the right name?) And then to look at the fist and the pets for adoptions!! This is so sad. It breaks my heart!! I have no idea who to call!!! In Englad, they had the RSPCA. I saw that Oprah episode on Pet Mills and I cried the whole time!!
Omg thats horrible. I personally never go in pet stores anymore...I remember there used to be a lot more around when I was a kid than there are now (thankfully). Any pet Ive ever owned, or will ever own in the future has come from the SPCA or Humane Society or other adoption type centers, or were strays. My first cat (who is now 11 years old) was actually a kitten that a stray had given birth to in a neighbors shed. My other cat was about 2 years old when I got her (kittens are adorable but older cats need owners too) and she has an amazing personality, wouldnt trade her for anything. I have a hard time even going to the Humane Society just to look or w/someone else who is looking to adopt cause I just want to take them all home with me...lol.
Wow thats horrible! I am in KC and would like to know which one. Thanks!
What pet store was it? I have half a mind to storm in there and issue some threats. You might try the Humane Society of Kansas City, and they could advise you on what you should do. That breaks my heart.
That is horrible. I'm such a pet lover. I'd have a hard time seeing something like that.
I wonder if you could call the Better Business Bureau about it?
It's in Shawnee on Nieman. I tried to call some where today, but the office hours were M-F so I'll try and call places on Monday. It still makes me mad thinking about it.
Besides calling the SPCA, you could call your local Tv station - a lot of them have tipster lines and will expose these places.
