Sophie came into our lives in January of 2004. (You can read a bit more of that story here.) It was a cold January day and as we were leaving the pet store, JM took her and put her under his sweatshirt to carry her out.
Sophie was our first baby. She was with us for almost 10 years. JM was in med school when we got her. She has been through all of the phases of JM's career - med school, intern year, residency and now. And because of all that, she also got to experience new cities and things like running on the beach and trying out a dog park.
Sophie loved belly rubs and dingo bones. She frequently liked to go under our beds. She wasn't big on playing and didn't know how to really walk with a leash. She would go outside and come immediately back when called. Sophie would also lick Max's face as if she were taking care of him.
Yesterday, she seemed completely normal and happy. Actually, she's seemed very active and very happy for the last couple of weeks, which I'm not sure is very "normal" for Sophie. I remember her eating yesterday, going outside and flashing her "Sophie Smile", taking a bone under Jillian's crib (a new hiding place for her), and following me around. For the last several days, she had been following me around from room to room and seemed just as happy as could be. This was definitely a new behavior for her, and now I'm wondering if she knew something was wrong and didn't want to be alone?
She has had this coughing/breathing issue but again, she seemed normal besides that. Last night around 10 pm, JM put her on our bed and she started getting worse and acting like she was trying to cough something up. At that point, I still thought she was ok and promised I would take her to the vet tomorrow. Just a few minutes later, she started doing it again and then coughed up blood and she definitely started looking different.
JM wrapped her in a towel and drove to the emergency vet.
I love that John Michael was the one who carried her out and into our lives and he was the one that was carrying her when she went out of our lives too.
Good-bye Sweet Sophie. We will always remember you as our first baby.
As for Jenna, she understands and has been talking about it a lot and asking questions. The first thing she said was, "But, I really liked Sophie." (meaning she much preferred her over Max.) A little bit later she also told us that Sophie would now be Chandler's friend. :(
My absolute favorite picture of Sophie and Jenna.
Giving the "Sophie Smile" during our meeting with Paul DeMio.
Laying on her back like the baby she thought she was.
Dressing her up and taking her to Woodward park in Tulsa.
